  • Welcome to obs4MIPs!

Obs4MIPs is an effort to make observational data more accessible for climate model evaluation, development and research. It does so by providing observational products technically aligned with climate model data, specifically dta made available through the World Climate Research Programme’s (WCRP) Coupled Model Intercomparison Project (CMIP). Many obs4MIPs products are made available via the Earth System Grid Federation (ESGF). A series of papers provide background material for the origins and advancement of obs4MIPs (Gleckler et al., 2011; Teixeira et al., 2014; Ferraro et al., 2015; Waliser et al., 2020).

Version controlled obs4MIPs compliant datasets provide the foundation for the effort. Some of these products are made available via ESGF, with version control and other registered content managed on a separate Github repository.

Obs4MIPs is a project of the World Climate Research Programme’s Earth System Modelling and Observations (ESMO). The obs4MIPs Steering Group is working closely with the CMIP International Project office.

Discussions are underway to revamp obs4MIPs with a priority to make products more readily available. If you would like to be involved please contact us and let us know (see mailing list address below).
